runners don't need substack

hey netrunner person! i see you have opinions, analyses and other tidbits about this cool card game and its community to share… good, that's good!

…

what's this? you want to make a substack? now where the hell did you get that idea?

…

what?? all the netrunner guys have substacks? but that's a page for influencers… also it keeps doing weird popups asking me to subscribe to everyones "newsletters". we all know these go to the spam folder sooner or later.

…

not to channel my inner Hiram, but… well let me tell you, back in my day, runners had other ways to seed our thoughts into the net. no wait, cut that crap, we have these means today and they are wonderful.

i don't want your newsletter in my inbox, i want your blog in my feedreader

it's really easy to just make a blog, like here on bearblog. if you style your netrunnerdb entries, you already know the Markdown syntax needed to make your posts pretty. if you do not, it's easy enough to learn.

you, runner, can also just go and "make.afucking.website". there's great resources for learning linked in that post! also look me in the eyes and tell me that this quote right here isn't a better embodiment of the runner spirit than… at least most of the things you have read today:

You live at the will of big tech and they will kill you. Take back control. Own your story. Kick Zuckerberg in the teeth. That last one is a stretch goal, but I believe you could be the one to do it.

do you want to be cool like the 2024 Circuit Breaker? the outstanding netrunner guide spike biased! is hosted as a gitlab page, and links the tools used for hosting it. this is an encouragement telling you that these tools are available for you as well!

and don't worry: if people want to keep reading your stuff and be notified if something new comes out, you can offer a feed and they can use a feed reader. look it up on wikipedia or something. these use the RSS/Atom protocols, which is also how all these discord bots get notified when there's a new post on the NSG website.

for the near future i'm brainstorming which runners and corp execs would use what tech available today.1 maybe that would be a fun way to let folks explore the options out there?

  1. i'm afraid among the runners, Magda would actually have a substack. but we don't all have to girlboss close to the sun.↩
